PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT

Our purpose and our perspective are so important, not only because they guide our mindset and our approach (who we are on the inside), but also because they drive our decisions and our behavior (what people see from us on the outside). We can believe all the right things. We can think all the right things. But it’s our performance - what we actually do - that ultimately determines the kind of experience we create and the kind of coach we become. Learning and improving internally only has value if we apply it to the behavior our people see from us each day.

For that reason, there’s value in clarifying what our very best in performance looks like, and what it requires from us. There’s also value in highlighting some of the barriers that most often keep coaches - including maybe you here today - from performing to their potential. You’ll have the opportunity to explore both in the pages to come.

You’ll also complete a series of training sessions we’ve titled “You First.” Each lesson in that series is focused on a specific winning behavior that helps to define the champion’s performance in sports, in coaching, or in any other area of life. If we had the chance to sit down together and build the champion athlete - the ultimate competitor - we would of course make them big and fast and strong. We’d also give them high level sport and athletic skill for the specific game they played. But that’s not all. We’d also make sure they possessed those qualities and characteristics that we know set the very best athletes apart. Those are the character and behavior skills that define the champion, and qualities that make each of us worthy of winning, on the playing field and beyond.

The “You First” title serves as a reminder that when it comes to developing your players in the areas that matter most, the most effective and authentic teaching tool you have at your disposal is your own powerful example. As a coach and a leader, you can’t take your players someplace you don’t know how to go yourself, or give away something you don’t possess. Simply put, the best way to help your players build their identity as champions is to show them what it looks like.

When you do that - when you do the hard work it takes to make that winning behavior a primary part of your performance - then you are openly inviting your players to step into that difficult but important development work, too. That makes it the best formula, not only for reaching your potential, but for helping your players do the same.
