PURPOSE DEVELOPMENT
“Why do you coach?”
That one simple question serves as the foundation on which your life in this profession is built. Your attitude and your energy, your mindset and your decisions, your intentions and your interactions - they all reveal the deeper reason why you’ve chosen to call yourself a coach. When you develop more clarity and conviction on why you’re here, it changes how you show up, and how you approach the important leadership work that’s in front of you here today.
The challenge for each of us is that there are a number of forces and factors that can easily distract us from our purpose, which can distort our perspective, and which can ultimately diminish our performance. Without that clarity and conviction, it can be easy for any coach to lose sight of what matters most, and in turn to end up settling for something less than their best. The objective of this Purpose Development Series is to help you develop that clarity and conviction, so you can continue to show up each day - including here today - committed to your calling, and equipped to create an experience you can be proud of.
The coursework in this section will help you answer some important questions, like…
•what is the origin of the word “coach,” and how does it relate to the work I’m doing here today?
•what was a coach created to do? What was I created to do?
•what part does the pursuit of winning play in fulfilling my purpose?
•what are the key principles of purpose-driven coaching, and how effectively do I put those principles into practice each day?
•how can I make my purpose a bigger and more important part of the experience I create, both for myself and for my players?
•what kind of a legacy do I want to leave in the lives of my players?
Purpose-driven coaching starts with a simple yet powerful belief: It’s not about you, it’s about them. It’s not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge. That was a coach’s primary responsibility centuries ago, and it remains the primary purpose for you here today, too, to help take your players someplace they need to go - someplace they may really want to go - but someplace they can’t go by themselves, and someplace, without your help, that they couldn’t have gone any other way.
